# Website personalization: a practical guide for small teams

> What website personalization is, the signals it can use, where to start, and how to know it's working, without an enterprise budget.

Website personalization means showing different visitors a different version of the same page, based on something you know about them: where they are, how they arrived, what they've done before. For a small team it doesn't need machine learning or a big budget. A few clear rules, each tested, cover most of what matters.

## What you can personalize on

These are the signals a rule can use, and the questions they answer:

| Signal | Answers | Examples |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Location | Where are they? | Country, state, continent, timezone |
| Traffic | How did they get here? | The campaign, the referring site, the page they landed on |
| Behavior | What have they done? | First visit or returning, pages this visit, scroll depth |
| Technology | What are they using? | Phone or desktop, browser, browser language |
| Time | When is it for them? | Time of day, day of the week |
| Your own data | What does your site know? | Signed in, plan, a cookie your site sets |

See [Conditions](https://geoengage.app/docs/rules/conditions) for the full list in GeoEngage.

## What you can change

- **Add something on top:** a banner, a sticky bar, a popup, a slide-in panel, a countdown, a floating button.
- **Change the page itself:** replace a headline's words, swap an image, insert a line, prefill a form, hide an element.
- **Send them elsewhere:** redirect to another page, carefully.

Changing the page itself is often better than adding a layer on top. It reads as part of the page, and there's nothing to close ([Actions](https://geoengage.app/docs/rules/actions)).

## Three rules to start with

1. **Location:** show each country the delivery terms, support hours or legal notice that apply to it. [Show a free-shipping message only to visitors who qualify](https://geoengage.app/blog/free-shipping-message-by-country) walks through one.
2. **Campaign:** make the landing page repeat what the ad promised, with **Session Campaign** or **Referrer URL** ([Traffic conditions](https://geoengage.app/docs/rules/conditions#traffic)).
3. **Behavior:** introduce yourself to first-time visitors and welcome returning ones differently, with **First Visit** ([Behavior conditions](https://geoengage.app/docs/rules/conditions#behavior)).

Each one fixes a gap between what a visitor needs and what a one-size page says. A store, a software company and a blog can all start with the same three, in their own words.

## How to know it's working

Personalization feels like it works almost every time, because the visitors you target were often likely to buy anyway. Two tests separate cause from coincidence:

- **An A/B test** checks one rule: some matching visitors see it, the rest don't ([A/B tests](https://geoengage.app/docs/rules/ab-tests)).
- **A holdout group** checks everything: a small random slice of visitors gets no rules at all ([What is a holdout group?](https://geoengage.app/blog/what-is-a-holdout-group)).

## Mistakes to avoid

- **Stacking.** Every matching rule runs. Three messages at once is worse than none, so check what else shows on the same pages.
- **Guessing too precisely.** Target by country, not by city: IP location often gets the city wrong.
- **Personalizing what search engines read.** Keep your main content the same for everyone, and personalize the messages around it.
- **Never measuring.** A rule nobody tested is a guess that stays on your site.

## Privacy, briefly

Personalization by country, campaign or visit count doesn't need to know who someone is. GeoEngage sets no cookies, gives each browser a random ID, and has a consent mode that waits for the visitor's answer before it tracks anything or runs any rule ([Consent mode](https://geoengage.app/docs/widget/consent)).

## Common questions

### How many rules should I start with?

One to three, each tested before you add more. A handful of rules you understand beats dozens you don't.

### Do I need a developer?

To paste one tag into your site, once. After that, rules are made in a visual builder.
