# Get started with GeoEngage

> Set up GeoEngage in four steps: add your site, install the tag, check that it works and publish your first personalization rule.

GeoEngage changes what visitors see on your website — popups, banners, sticky bars and in-page text, image and form changes — based on where they are, the device they use and how they behave. It runs as a single script tag; everything else happens in your dashboard.

## 1. Add your site

[Start a free trial](https://geoengage.app/auth) — 14 days, no credit card. Setup asks what visitors should see differently and which website it's for, then gives you the tag with your site's API key already in it.

Already have an account? Open **Sites** in the dashboard and choose **Add Site**. Every plan includes unlimited websites.

## 2. Install the tag

Paste the tag inside `<head>` on every page, above your content:

```html
<!-- GeoEngage — place in <head>, above your content.
     Do not add async/defer: the widget must run before the page paints. -->
<script
  src="https://cdn.geoengage.app/ge.js"
  data-api-key="YOUR_API_KEY"
  data-require-consent="false"
></script>
```

> [!IMPORTANT]
> Don't add `async` or `defer`, and don't load the tag through a tag manager. The widget has to run before the browser paints the page — otherwise visitors see your page for a moment before a rule changes it.

There's a step-by-step guide for [Shopify](https://geoengage.app/docs/install/shopify), [WordPress](https://geoengage.app/docs/install/wordpress), [Webflow](https://geoengage.app/docs/install/webflow), [Squarespace](https://geoengage.app/docs/install/squarespace), [Wix](https://geoengage.app/docs/install/wix), [Next.js](https://geoengage.app/docs/install/nextjs), [React](https://geoengage.app/docs/install/react) and [any other site](https://geoengage.app/docs/install/html).

## 3. Check it's working

Open any page of your site in a new tab. Setup notices the visit within a few seconds, and so does this check:

Nothing after a minute? See [The tag isn't detected](https://geoengage.app/docs/troubleshooting#the-tag-isnt-detected).

## 4. Publish your first rule

A rule pairs **conditions** — who it's for, such as visitors from Germany on a phone — with an **action**: what those visitors see. Setup suggests a first rule from the goal you picked; later, add more from **Rules → Add New Rule**. [How rules work](https://geoengage.app/docs/rules) covers the rest.

A rule only reaches your site once it's published. **Save & Publish** puts it live. The widget checks your rules on every page view, and again on every route change in a single-page app.

## Next steps

- [Forward widget events](https://geoengage.app/docs/widget/events), such as CTA clicks, to your own analytics.
- [Track conversions](https://geoengage.app/docs/widget/methods#trackconversion) that only your code knows about, like a completed order.
- [Turn on consent mode](https://geoengage.app/docs/widget/consent) if visitors must opt in before any tracking.
- [Use the JavaScript API](https://geoengage.app/docs/widget) to read the visitor's location in your own code.
