# Segments

> Save a group of visitors once, see how it converts against everyone else, and target it with rules.

A segment is a saved group of visitors, such as *mobile visitors from paid campaigns*. Define it once, then use it three ways: to see how that group converts, to narrow any report to it, and to target it with rules.

## Creating a segment

Open **Measurement → Segments** and add one. A segment is built from the same [conditions](https://geoengage.app/docs/rules/conditions) as a rule, grouped the same way.

A segment is measured from visits you've already collected, so one you create today already has figures for the past.

## Reading a segment

Each segment is compared with everyone else over the date range at the top of the page:

- **Visits**: how many visits matched, and their share of all visits.
- **Converted**: the segment's conversion rate beside everyone else's. Choose a goal next to **Conversions count** to count only that goal instead of any goal.
- **Difference**: whether the segment converts **Higher**, **Lower** or **Similar**, or **Not sure yet** when the gap could still be chance. It's the same check the report tables use.
- **Value per visit**: shown when your goals carry values.
- **Pages per visit**.

A rate needs at least 100 visits behind it, and a difference needs 100 visits in the segment and 100 outside it. If nobody matched, widen the segment.

A difference tells you where to look, not what caused it. The visitors in a segment differ from everyone else in more ways than the segment's conditions. To measure what a change causes, use a rule's [holdout](https://geoengage.app/docs/rules/holdouts).

## Narrowing a report to a segment

On **Audience**, **Pages**, **Goals** and a funnel's page, choose **Filter → Segment** and pick one. Every figure on the page then counts only that segment's visits, and you can combine it with the other filters. **Open in reports** on the Segments page does the same.

A visit belongs to a segment if any of its page views matched, so **Page URL/Path** means "viewed that page at some point in the visit".

### Conditions reports can measure

Reports work from what the widget sent with each visit, so they can measure these conditions:

- **Location:** Country, Country Code, State, Continent, Timezone
- **Technology:** Device Type, Browser
- **Traffic:** Referrer URL, Session Source, Session Campaign, Page URL/Path, Landing Page
- **Behavior:** First Visit

Text conditions can use any comparison except **matches regex**.

A segment that uses any other condition, such as a cookie, a visit count or the time of day, still works for targeting. Its row on the Segments page says which conditions can't be measured, and it can't be used as a report filter.

> [!NOTE]
> In a report, **Referrer URL** is compared with the referring site's domain.

## Targeting a segment

Choose **Create rule** on a segment, or add the **Audience Segment** condition to any rule and pick the segment. The rule then uses the segment's conditions, and when you change the segment, every rule that uses it changes with it. If you delete a segment, rules that target it stop matching anyone until you give them another audience.

A segment can't include another segment.
